A Retired English/Literature Teacher
Behind the Wheel Driving School owner Philip “Bud” Thorne is a retired high school English/literature teacher whose career spanned 30 years in the educational system in Newfoundland. The bulk of his teaching career was spent at Gonzaga High School (three of which he spent as Assistant Principal), and he retired in 1996 after spending his last 10 years teaching at Holy Heart of Mary High School.
A Certified Traffic Safety Instructor
Bud was employed by the Newfoundland Safety Council for several years as an in-class and in-car instructor for novice drivers. He was provincially certified as a Traffic Safety Instructor by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (Department of Government Services – Motor Vehicle Registration Division) in 1999 (certificate #004).
Successfully Operating BTWDS Since 2005
Since 2005, Bud has operated Behind the Wheel Driving School in St. John’s, Newfoundland. From 1999 to the present, he has personally and successfully provided in-class and in-car instruction to some 2,500-novice drivers, leading all his students to obtain their first driver’s licence.
